Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for Mayurbhanj district and yellow warning for 20 other districts of Odisha for tomorrow, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.
According to the latest forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are very likely to occur during the afternoon and evening hours at one or two places in these districts tomorrow.
The IMD has issued an orange warning for Mayurbhanj, where thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusty surface winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph are expected. Besides, a yellow warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts.
In these areas, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are likely. The weather department has advised people to remain alert, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
“Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching upto 40-50 kmph) are very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri”, read the IMD prediction for May 13.
Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching upto 40-50 kmph) are very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Nabarangapur, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Koraput on May 14. These districts have been issued a yellow warning.
For May 15, the regional weather office has predicted thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching upto 40-50 kmph) in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Nabarangapur, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi and Kandhamal districts. These districts are under yellow alert.

Citizens have been asked to avoid taking shelter under trees and to take necessary precautions against lightning and strong winds. Farmers and those working outdoors are advised to plan their activities accordingly.
