Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is set to launch an automated system at toll plazas across the state to identify and penalize vehicle owners without valid insurance. This initiative, aimed at enhancing road safety and compliance, will come into effect on February 1.
The State Transport Authority (STA) on Saturday said in a post on X, that the e-detection system will be operational at all 22 toll plazas on National Highways in Odisha.
Under the system, vehicles without valid insurance coverage will be automatically flagged, and e-challans will be issued to the respective owners. The Transport Department will subsequently initiate legal action against offenders.
As per the Motor Vehicles Act, it is mandatory for all vehicles to have valid insurance. Violators could face a fine of ₹2,000, imprisonment for up to three months, or both. Repeat offenders may incur a fine of ₹4,000 and additional jail time.
The Transport Department has already been utilizing automated systems to detect violations such as speeding, expired fitness certificates, and pending tax dues. This new measure is aimed at ensuring compensation for families in the event of accidents involving uninsured vehicles.
