Jharsuguda: The Mahanadi, Odisha’s lifeline, is facing a serious pollution threat, with black, oily substances reportedly contaminating its waters after alleged discharge of untreated industrial effluents from neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
The pollution has severely affected the upper reaches of the Hirakud reservoir, triggering concern among residents over the safety of water used for drinking and other purposes.
Thick layers of black grease-like and oily substances have been spotted floating on the river. Local residents said the material gets pushed towards the riverbanks by strong winds, where it accumulates and emits a foul smell. The worsening condition has raised fears among people, who are now reluctant even to come into contact with the water.
Residents have alleged that more than 60 industrial units, including steel, sponge iron and thermal power plants in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district, are releasing chemical-laden wastewater into the river without adequate treatment.
According to local accounts, the polluted discharge enters the Mahanadi system through the Badkelo and Sankelo rivers, which flow through Raigarh town, before reaching the Hirakud reservoir in Odisha.
The contamination has reportedly spread to border villages, including Kusmel, Pujharipali, Palsada and Sahasbaga in Lakhanpur block of Jharsuguda district.
Of particular concern is the reported accumulation of the oily pollutants near the drinking water intake well. The water supply project caters to 16 gram panchayats in Lakhanpur block and areas extending up to Hemgir in neighbouring Sundargarh district, raising concerns over the health and safety of a large population.
Local intellectuals and residents have demanded stringent legal action against the industries allegedly responsible for the pollution, as well as intervention by the Chhattisgarh government to prevent further contamination of the river.
Meanwhile, the Jharsuguda district administration has taken note of the issue. The Collector said a special administrative team would be constituted to conduct an immediate investigation and initiate necessary action based on its findings.
