Bhubaneswar: A local trader was brutally murdered late Thursday night at Gayatri Basti under Lingaraj Police Station limits in the state capital.
The deceased has been identified as Jitu Kandi, who ran a paan shop in the area. His blood-stained body was found near his shop on Friday morning.
According to preliminary investigations, he succumbed to severe head injuries.
Police rushed to the spot after being informed about the incident and have initiated a detailed probe. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and forensic teams are collecting evidence from the crime scene.
Locals revealed that Jitu used to run a paan shop and was allegedly involved in collecting money from nearby business establishments. Police are investigating whether a dispute over these matters triggered the fatal attack. Jitu was spotted drinking alcohol with four other friends on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, police have detained his three friends Gangadhar Behera, Chagu, and Babuna Behera for questioning. Another suspect, Gopal Das, is reportedly absconding.
Police are also probing allegations that Jitu was running an illegal liquor business in the locality. His shop had reportedly been sealed by police earlier, but he had resumed operations.
The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, and further investigation is underway.
