Sonepur: Yet another elephant died of electrocution near Mahada village under Binika forest division in Odisha’s Sonepur district on Tuesday. According to reports, the tusker died after coming in contact with a live wire fence laid for poaching wild boars.
On being informed, Forest Department officials reached the spot and started an investigation into the matter. They confirmed that the elephant died due to electrocution and seized the electric wire trap which was laid across 1 km.
The death of the elephant has triggered anger among the local villagers who allege that the inefficiency of the Forest personnel has helped the poachers rule the area.
It is worth mentioning here that recently the Odisha Forest and Environment Minister Pradip Amat told the state Assembly that a total of 784 elephants have died in the state in the last 10 years, many due to man-animal conflict.
