Subarnapur: Police on Wednesday arrested two persons and seized 1,695 counterfeit Rs 500 notes amounting to Rs 8,47,500 in the town area near the State Bank of India in Subarnapur district.
Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted the accused while they were roaming in the market in an SUV. During a search, the fake currency notes were recovered from their possession. The vehicle used by the accused has also been seized.
Subarnapur SP Narayan Nayak said the counterfeit notes were identified as fake since several of them bore identical serial numbers. The accused were detained during routine patrolling on Tuesday and subsequently arrested after verification.
Preliminary investigation revealed that one of the accused hails from Bargarh district, while the other is from Chhattisgarh. Police said efforts are underway to verify their detailed addresses and trace possible links to a larger counterfeit currency network.
Two mobile phones have also been seized from the accused. Both persons will be produced before a local court on Wednesday. Further investigation is in progress.
