Baripada: A severe Kalabaisakhi (nor’wester) storm hit Mayurbhanj district late Friday night, claiming two lives and injuring several others.
According to reports, the storm brought heavy rain and strong winds, uprooting trees and causing widespread damage. In one incident, a motorcyclist was killed when a tree fell on him at Asanajoda Square on Baripada-Kuliana Road on National Highway-18.
The victim was identified as Ramdas Hansda from Kathasirasi village.
In another incident, a motorcyclist crashed into a tree on the Baripada-Udala road at Khunta and succumbed to injuries. The victim was identified as Nagen Murmu from Kadadiha village.
The bodies were taken to Baripada Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. The injured were also admitted to the hospital for treatment.
The storm also caused damage to infrastructure, including a bamboo gate that was destroyed in Baripada town. A tractor was trapped under the debris.
