Cuttack: An undertrial prisoner died while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital on Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as Ajay Das (23).
According to sources, Das was undergoing imprisonment at Keonjhar jail after being convicted in a rape case. He attempted suicide by hanging himself on the jail premises yesterday.
However, police are yet to ascertain the reason that led Ajay to take the extreme step.
As per Keonjhar Jail Superintendent Kuanar Marandi, Ajay talked to one of his family members over the phone and later went to the toilet where attempted to end his life by hanging himself on Friday. He was rescued and rushed to Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital initially. As his condition worsened, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, he died while undergoing treatment.
Keonjhar Town police registered a case in this connection.
