Jajpur: A 29-year-old undertrial prisoner (UTP) allegedly died by suicide at Ragadi sub-jail near Vyasanagar in Jajpur district on Wednesday.
The UTP identified as Balaram Behera committed suicide by hanging himself in a newly constructed building.
According to reports, Balaram attempted to kill self by hanging with the help of his towel inside the under-construction building for the medical center inside the jail. Security personnel noticed him while he hanged himself. They rescued him in a critical condition and admitted to Jajpur Road Community Health Centre. However, doctors declared him dead.
Jajpur Road police reached the hospital and seized the body for post-mortem.
Police launched an investigation into the matter.
Balaram was in Ragadi sub-jail for last 49 days in a case under the POCSO Act.
