Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner lodged in Phulbani Circle Jail died while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur.
The deceased, identified as Yashobanta Amat, hailed from Kelapada Panchayat under the jurisdiction of Phiringia police station in Kandhamal district. He had been arrested along with his wife on September 5 in connection with a ganja (cannabis) trafficking case.
Following their arrest, the couple was produced before the court, which rejected their bail plea. They were subsequently remanded to judicial custody and lodged in Phulbani District Jail.
Due to a deterioration in his health, Yashobanta was referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur for treatment. However, he succumbed while undergoing treatment.
Jail authorities have filed a complaint regarding the incident at Baidyanathpur Police Station in Brahmapur. Further investigation is underway.
