Sambalpur: A woman allegedly threw a newborn baby into an abandoned open bore-well at Laripali near Regali in Sambalpur district today.

Some local residents have witnessed the crime committed by a woman. However, they haven’t divulged it, said a local.

After hearing the screaming of the infant, passersby informed the fire services department and local administration.

The fire services personnel rushed to the spot with all equipment and started the operation.

“We received the information at around 2 pm that somebody threw a newborn into the bore-well which is estimated to be of 15-20 feet. Passersby heard the screaming of the baby and informed us,” Rengali BDO said.

Now, our operation is in progress. It will take time, but we are working hard to complete the operation soon. Two doctors’ teams have provided oxygen to the baby in the bore well, the BDO added.

Three JCB machines have been engaged to dig a pit parallel to the bore-well. We have also arranged a generator to continue the operation in night. The bore well is around 50 years old, he added.

“The infant is now alive. The screaming is also audible. The baby is stated to be one or two days old. We are trying to save the baby. We are prepared with the emergency drugs, oxygen and ambulance,” said a doctor who is monitoring the condition.

Sambalpur Sadar police have also reached the spot. Police have barricaded the area to ensure a smooth rescue operation.
