Bhubaneswar: Two elderly women died after being trampled by elephants in Balasore and Keonjhar districts in the wee hours of Tuesday.

According to sources, an elderly woman was trampled to death by a herd of elephants at Santaragadia in Balasore district in the wee hours of Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Pintu Deuri,  a resident of Srideipur village.

Deuhuri had gone to attend nature’s call last night when she encountered a herd of elephants.  The tuskers crushed the elderly woman to death.

Her family members rushed to her after listening to her screaming and shooed away the elephants. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead.

Dehuri’s death, meanwhile, has sent shockwaves in the village.

Another woman identified as Muni Kisan of Telkoi in Keonjhar district met with a similar kind of fate while she had gone to pluck mahula flowers in the early morning.

Muni had gone to pluck mahula flowers when she was trampled to death.

The elephant herd did not leave the body of Muni even after killing her. The villagers chased the elephant herd and shooed them away following which the wild pachyderms left Muni’s body.

By the time Muni was rescued by villagers and family members, she had died.

Upon being informed by villagers, forest officials reached the village and sent the body for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, villagers blamed forest officials for the rise of such elephants.
