Mayurbhanj: In a gruesome incident, an elderly man was allegedly hacked to death at Madhunanda village under Baisinga police limits in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, late on Sunday night.
The deceased has been identified as Devendra Sasmal (53). He was a farmer.
According to reports, Sasmal was sleeping on the verandah of his house last night when his son Ratnakar heard some suspicious sounds. On opening the door, Ratnakar found his father lying in a pool of blood with an almost severed head.
Hearing Ratnakar’s cries for help, neighbours gathered at the spot and informed the police. Soon, police rushed to the village, recovered the body for post-mortem, and initiated an investigation. The services of a scientific team have been pressed into the probe.
Although the reason for the brutal murder is yet to be ascertained, police suspect that unidentified miscreants are behind Devendra’s death.
