Kendrapada: Tension gripped Jadupur Bandhsahi village under Marshaghai police station limits in Kendrapada district on Monday after hundreds of villagers blocked a road and demanded that a murder accused be handed over to them during a police scene recreation.
The incident occurred when police brought the accused, identified as Arajit Mohanty, to the village for scene recreation in connection with the murder of a college student on the night of October 30.
According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s family, the student was allegedly called out of her house and murdered by having her throat slit. Police subsequently arrested Arajit in connection with the crime.
However, the arrival of the accused in the village triggered anger among residents, who blocked the road and demanded that he be handed over to them.
As the situation escalated, police attempted to leave the spot with the accused. However, the agitated villagers detained the police personnel, surrounded their vehicle and raised slogans. They reportedly held Marshaghai police station IIC Tapan Nayak and some other personnel for nearly an hour.
The situation was brought under control following discussions and persuasion.
Police suspect that more persons may have been involved in the murder. However, no official reaction was available from the police regarding Monday’s incident.
