Bhubaneswar: A student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Burla has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a female classmate late on Thursday night. The accused was taken into custody after a complaint was lodged at the Burla police station.
The accused and the victim are both final-year BTech students.
According to reports, the complaint alleged that the student had physically assaulted the victim at a rented accommodation where he was staying. The victim also accused him of torturing her and attempting to extort money.
Following the complaint, the police registered a case against the accused and arrested him. His bail plea was rejected, and he was remanded to judicial custody before being sent to Sambalpur Circle Jail.
The university had earlier suspended the student in connection with the incident. University authorities have now handed the matter over to the Internal Complaints Committee for further inquiry.
