Bhubaneswar: Weak monsoon activity has led to largely cloud-free skies across coastal Odisha, causing temperatures to rise alongside persistently high humidity levels. This combination has resulted in a sharp increase in the heat index, making conditions feel markedly more oppressive in several parts of the state.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), observations recorded at 11:30 am on September 6 showed Baleshwar registering 35.2°C with 60 per cent humidity and a heat index of 46°C. Bhubaneswar recorded 34.8°C with 57 per cent humidity and a heat index of 43°C, while Puri reported 34.6°C, 69 per cent humidity and the highest heat index of 48°C.

Chandbali saw temperatures of 34.4°C with 64 per cent humidity and a heat index of 45°C, and Gopalpur registered 33.4°C with 70 per cent humidity and a heat index of 45°C.

IMD officials have advised residents to take necessary precautions amid the ongoing sultry conditions. People have been urged to drink plenty of water to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight especially during peak hours, and stay in cool indoor environments as much as possible.

Special attention has been recommended for the elderly, children and those with pre-existing health conditions until monsoon activity strengthens and brings relief.
