Gajapati: A man was chased and stabbed to death by a fellow villager during a marriage procession at Chandragiri village under Mohana police limits in Gajapati district on Tuesday night.
The death of a youth identified as Prasant Pradhan of Chandragiri village sparked tension as irate locals went berserk and torched the accused Srihari Pradhan’s house.
Also, women of the village held up traffic on National Highway 326 demanding compensation for Prashant’s family. Meanwhile, tehsildars of both R Udayagiri and Mohan have reached the spot to pacify the irate villagers.
Police, however, arrested the accused and registered a case in this connection. Past enmity is said to be the reason behind the gruesome killing.
According to sources, Prashant had got married a few days back. Srihari Pradhan chased Prashant and stabbed him when a marriage procession was being taken out in the village. Srihari fled the scene after committing the crime. Villagers rushed Prashant to Mohana Community Health Centre where he died while undergoing treatment.
Prashant’s mother-in-law said, “My son-in-law was a good human being. My daughter had come to our house. My daughter was supposed to go to her in-laws’ house today. She has lost Prashant forever. We demand stringent punishment for Srihari and his aides.”
Police, meanwhile, sent the body for post-mortem.
Police forces have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident in the village.
