Bhubaneswar: A well marked low pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal off North Odisha and West Bengal coasts at 1730 hours IST of today, the 13th of August. To move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said in a tweet.
Under the influence of the system, Sambalpur has recorded 129.2 mm, Hirakud 80.8 mm, Bargarh 79.6 mm, Jagatsinghpur 75.8 mm and Puri 60.9 mm of rainfall between 8.30 AM to 5.30 PM today.
Following heavy incessant rainfall in the upper catchment of Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh water level has risen in Hirakud Dam.
To deal with the situation, Hirakud Dam authorities have opened 34 sluice gates by 9 PM today to discharge floodwater.
By 8 AM tomorrow, 6 lakh cusecs of floodwater is expected to pass through Mundali in Cuttack.
Similarly, the water level in rivers Baitarini and Jalaka is rising following heavy rain in the upper catchment areas.
Besides, the IMD has issued a Red alert for the districts of Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Dhenkanal, Jajpur and Bhadrak districts till 8.30 AM of Sunday predicting scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls.
It has issued an Orange alert for the districts of Khordha, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Ganjam, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Bargarh, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Rayagada districts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls during the same period.
It has also issued a Yellow alert for the districts of Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Koraput districts predicting heavy rainfall during the same period.
