Bhubaneswar: Several districts of Odisha continued to experience intense rainfall on Tuesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded heavy to extremely heavy showers in many places till 08:30 am.

According to the latest data released by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Balasore district emerged as the worst affected with exceptionally high rainfall. The station at Balasore recorded 246.6 mm, followed by Nilgiri with 239.0 mm, Jajpur with 236.8 mm, and Remuna with 222.0 mm.

Several other stations in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh also received very heavy rainfall.

The IMD has classified the rainfall as extremely heavy at five stations, very heavy at 24 stations, and heavy at 60 stations across the state. This intense spell is a result of the deep depression that crossed the Odisha-West Bengal coast and is now moving inland.

The heavy downpour has already triggered flood-like situations in several areas. In Balasore, the Jalaka River has crossed the danger mark, submerging hundreds of hectares of farmland in Basta and Sadar blocks.

Many low-lying areas in Balasore town and other districts are waterlogged, disrupting normal life and traffic movement. With more rainfall likely in the coming hours, the district administrations have been put on high alert.

People have been advised to stay away from low-lying and flood-prone areas and follow all safety instructions issued by the authorities.
