Bhubaneswar: A wild pachyderm trampled a 20-year-old girl to death in a jungle near Gurutuan village under the Champua forest range in Odisha’s Keonjhar district on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Sombari Munda, a native of Gurutuan under Jajang panchayat.
According to reports, the gruesome incident occurred when the girl was on her way to her maternal grandfather’s house taking a road that passes through a jungle. On the way, the girl suddenly encountered a wild elephant that attacked and trampled her to death on the spot.
On being informed, police from Bamebari and local Forest Department staff reached the spot and started an investigation into the incident. The police sent Sombari’s body for post-mortem and registered a case of unnatural death.
Talking to reporters, Bamebari IIC Dipti Ranjan Sahu confirmed that the girl was killed in an elephant attack. On the other hand, Forest Department staff strived hard to drive off the elephant herd into the forest.
