Bhanjanagar: A woman was allegedly hacked to death by her brother-in-law, while her son sustained serious injuries in an axe attack following a family dispute in Palakhand village under Gangapur police limits in Ganjam district on Wednesday evening, police said.

The deceased was identified as Bhasi Pradhan, wife of Gouranga Pradhan. The injured youth, Bhasi’s son, was initially admitted to Asika hospital before being shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur after his condition deteriorated.

According to preliminary information, Bhasi had an altercation with her brother-in-law’s family a day before the incident. Police said the accused allegedly attacked her with an axe while she was grazing goats in a field. Her husband has lodged a complaint accusing his brother of the murder.

Additional SP Ranjan Kumar De and SDPO Deepak Kumar Mishra visited the spot and supervised the investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, while three persons have been detained for questioning.

Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the crime.
