Bhubaneswar: A woman was allegedly hacked to death while another was critically injured after a violent dispute broke out over roof construction work at Haripur village under Khaira police station limits in Balasore district on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Kamala Sethy (39). Her sister-in-law, Shankuntala Sethy, is battling for life after being shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack in critical condition. Her condition is stated to be critical.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning when Surendra’s family was carrying out centring work for the roof of their under-construction house. A dispute erupted with their neighbours over the roof construction, which soon turned violent. The argument soon escalated when his neighbour Bharat Jena and his family members allegedly objected, asking why they were constructing on the disputed plot. The situation soon turned violent as Bharat Jena, his wife Bharati, son Manas, and another family member Minati allegedly launched a ferocious attack on Surendra’s family using sharp weapons. Surendra’s sister Kamala suffered fatal injuries in the attack and died on the spot.
Surendra, his wife Shankuntala, and daughter Tulasi also sustained serious injuries. All the injured were first rushed to Khaira Hospital. As Sakuntala’s condition deteriorated, she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Meanwhile, Khaira Police have registered a case and detained Bharati. Efforts are on to arrest the remaining accused.
