Bhubaneswar: In a deeply disturbing incident, family members of a woman carried her body on a bicycle to the Khaira Police Station in Haripur village under Balasore district, in protest against police failure to resolve a long-pending land dispute that turned fatal.
As per reports, tension ran high in Haripur village under Khaira police station limits after the family of Kamala Sethi took this extreme step. The incident stems from a bitter land dispute that had dragged on for nearly five years.
On May 10, the accused — Bharat Jena, his son Manas Jena, and wife Bharati Jena — allegedly launched a brutal attack on Kamala Sethy and another woman using a hammer and sharp weapons. Kamala Sethy died on the spot, while her sister-in-law is fighting for her life at SCB Medical College and Hospital. When Kamala’s body was brought home Sunday late night, anguished relatives and villagers decided to carry it on a bicycle to Khaira Police Station the next morning.
They alleged that despite repeated complaints over the past five years, the police had failed to resolve the long-pending dispute, allowing the situation to turn fatal.
Police officials claimed that notices had been issued earlier in the matter. They requested the family to transport the body in an ambulance, but the grieving relatives refused and continued their protest outside the police station, demanding the immediate arrest of all three accused.
Meanwhile, villagers have joined them in their protest seeking justice for the deceased woman.
