Dhenkanal: The police arrested a woman lecturer in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha on charges of branding her daughter-in-law allegedly for dowry.
According to reports, Suprava Jena, a History lecturer at Swami Vivekananda Memorial Autonomous College at Jagatsinghpur, allegedly branded her daughter-in-law Rashmita Behera with a hot pan after the latter burnt bread while baking them a few days ago.
Rashmita, a native of Dhenkanal district, had lodged a complaint in this regard at the Bhuban police station.
Rashmita’s father, mother, and brother-in-law live in Pune and came to Rashmita’s home after receiving the news of her torture. They took Rashmita home to Dhenkanal for treatment and lodged a written complaint at Bhuban police station. Following this, Bhuban police SI Bijan Sethi arrested Suprabha and her son Digvijay Kharavel from Ugratar Colony in Jagatsinghpur on Saturday morning.
“The woman lecturer and her son have been produced in a court in Dhenkanal. It has been alleged that the woman lecturer was torturing her daughter-in-law over dowry,” said a police officer.
