Cuttack: Hospitals are meant to be places of healing, where patients and their families place their utmost trust in the system. But at Cuttack’s prestigious SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMC&H), that trust was shaken by a disturbing allegation of misbehaviour inside an intensive care unit.
According to reports, a woman admitted to the Medicine department ICU of SCBMC&H was allegedly misbehaved by a staff member two days ago on the night of Sunday. The incident came to light on Tuesday after the patient confided in her mother, who subsequently lodged a complaint at Mangalabag Police Station.
Based on the FIR, police arrested the accused, identified as Manas Pati, a native of Jajpur district. He was residing in a rented house in Cuttack’s Machhua Bazaar area and was engaged at SCBMCH through a private manpower consultancy firm.
Preliminary information indicates that the alleged incident occurred between 9:00 pm and 9:15 pm, when Manas was shifting another patient within the hospital premises. The woman, who was still under treatment in the ICU, had reportedly asked him for water. Taking advantage of the situation, he allegedly misbehaved with her. She narrated the ordeal to her mother the following morning, prompting immediate action.
Police have forwarded Manas to court and begun a detailed investigation into the allegations. The case has sparked shock and concern among the public, raising questions over patient safety inside one of Odisha’s most reputed government medical institutions.
