Bhubaneswar: The Department of Women and Child Development (WCD) on Thursday observed World Breastfeeding Week 2026 at the State level in Bhubaneswar, with young children and their parents participating in the programme.

The programme was chaired by Dr. Mrinalini Darswal, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, WCD Department. Director Monisha Banerjee delivered the welcome address.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Darswal highlighted the importance of breastfeeding, stating that breast milk is a child’s first vaccine and the most nutritious source of food.

She stressed the need to initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth, ensure exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continue breastfeeding along with complementary feeding up to two years for the child’s physical, mental and cognitive development. She also underlined the important role of fathers and family members in ensuring the healthy growth and overall development of children.

Representatives from the Wadhwani Foundation, a global not-for-profit tech organization, attended the programme and demonstrated an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solution that enables measurement of a child’s weight, height, head circumference, chest circumference and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) through a mobile phone video.

The Commissioner appreciated the initiative and suggested certain refinements to improve its accuracy, usability and effectiveness. It is noteworthy that Odisha is among the States where the AI-based child growth monitoring system will be piloted.

Parents of children in the 0–6 years age group who attended the programme were felicitated with nutrition baskets containing fruits and child-care kits, underscoring the importance of proper nutrition and care during early childhood.

Senior officers, officials and consultants of the department also participated in the programme and reiterated their commitment to promoting breastfeeding, improving maternal and child nutrition, and ensuring a healthier future for every child.

World Breastfeeding Week is being observed from August 1 to 7. On the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida reiterated the State Government’s commitment to promoting breastfeeding as the foundation of child health.

“Mother’s milk is the first shield of protection for a child’s healthy life. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months lays the foundation for a healthy child and a stronger future,” she said, urging families and communities to support mothers in ensuring optimal infant nutrition.
