Dhenkanal: World Elephant Day–2026 was observed at Kapilash Zoological Park under Dhenkanal Forest Division with a strong message of elephant conservation, habitat protection and promotion of harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants.
The programme was held in the presence of Lalit Kumar Patra, Divisional Forest Officer, Dhenkanal, along with Nilendra Narayan Singh Dalapati, ACF, Dhenkanal, and Bidya Sagar, ACF, Dhenkanal. Officers and staff of the Forest Department and Kapilash Zoological Park actively participated in the celebration.
The programme also witnessed the participation of Bijay Kumar Dehury, Sarpanch, Deogan, Diptimayee Lenka, Eco-Club Master Trainer and Environment Lover, and members of the Youth Club, Deogan, reflecting the importance of community participation in wildlife conservation.
Addressing the gathering, the dignitaries highlighted the ecological significance of elephants as a keystone and ecosystem-engineering species and emphasized the need for protection of elephant habitats, maintenance of landscape connectivity, prevention of electrocution and other anthropogenic threats, and strengthening community-based conservation initiatives.
The programme focused on creating greater awareness among local communities and young people about the importance of elephants and their habitats. The participation of the Eco Club, youth representatives and local elected representatives added an important community dimension to the celebration and reinforced the message that elephant conservation is a shared responsibility.
The Forest Department reiterated its commitment towards strengthening wildlife protection, habitat management, scientific monitoring, community engagement and mitigation of human–elephant conflict in the Dhenkanal landscape.
The celebration concluded with an appeal to all stakeholders to work collectively towards securing a safe and sustainable future for elephants and ensuring peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.
