Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department observed World Rabies Day on Monday by organising awareness programmes in more than 3,000 high schools across the state.
Veterinarians and departmental officials interacted with students, teachers and educators, explaining the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of rabies as part of the statewide campaign.
Students were advised to immediately wash any dog-bite wound thoroughly with soap and clean water and seek medical attention at the nearest health centre without delay. They were also urged to take anti-rabies vaccination as advised by doctors.
Veterinarians stressed the importance of regular vaccination of pet dogs and other animals to prevent the spread of rabies.
Question-and-answer sessions were also held between veterinary professionals and students during the programmes. Officials said creating awareness at the school level would help strengthen collective efforts towards eliminating rabies through timely treatment, responsible pet vaccination and public awareness.
