Bhubaneswar: The three-day Fish and Animal Husbandry Convention in Bhubaneswar has showcased the Punganur, a small breed of domestic cow recognized as the world’s smallest Indian breed of zebuine cattle.

This miniature cow has gained popularity after a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi petting one at his residence on Makar Sankranti on January 14, 2024, went viral on social media.

The Punganur cow stands at an impressive 70-90 cm in height and weighs between 115-200 kilograms. Its ability to thrive on minimal food and adapt to both dry and hot climates makes it an ideal breed for the Indian climate. Known for their calm nature, Punganur cows are a symbol of Indian culture and spiritual consciousness.

This unique breed produces an average of 3.5 liters of milk per day, with an impressive 8 percent ghee content. Notably, the renowned Tirupati Ladu is made from the ghee of Punganur cows. The Punganur cow is an integral part of regional festivals, celebrations, and prosperity.
