Bhubaneswar: A seven-year-old baby elephant Mama died at Damapada Kumarakhunti Elephant Training Centre at Chandaka on Wednesday.
According to the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Chandaka, the elephant’s death is suspected to be due to herpes virus infection. The exact cause of death will be known after the post-mortem report.
Three other elephants at the training centre are also infected with herpes and are undergoing treatment, said the DFO.
As per reports, Mama was born in 2017 and brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park after being separated from her mother in the Tangi forest in Khurda. She was later shifted to the training centre.
It may be mentioned that baby elephants who got separated from their herds due to one reason or the other and rescued by the Forest Department are being provided Kumki training here at the training centre.
