Young Odia Woman Among Andhra Stampede Victims

Bhubaneswar: A young woman from Odisha is among the ten devotees who died in a stampede at Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, which claimed ten lives, mostly women and children.

R Roopa of Gudipadar of Patrapur block in Ganjam district died, while one of her relatives sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Her body is being transported to her native place by an ambulance.

The incident occurred during Ekadashi celebrations, with a massive gathering of devotees leading to chaos and panic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
