Bhubaneswar: A 36-year-old man, who was admitted to a rehabilitation centre located under the Airport Police Station area here on Sunday evening, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Monday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Sumanta Panda, a resident of Unit 6.
According to reports, Sumanta was admitted to the centre on Sunday evening by his family members for his addiction treatment. However, his family received startling news that Sumanta had been rushed to the Capital Hospital a few hours after his admission to the rehab centre.
Officials of the rehabilitation facility had secretly admitted Sumanta to the hospital around 4 am on Monday and explicitly instructed hospital authorities to notify Sumanta’s family about his tragic demise before leaving.
Upon receiving this devastating news, Sumanta’s loved ones hastily rushed to the hospital. To their utter surprise, Sumanta’s family members discovered that representatives of the rehab centre were conspicuously absent. Their absence merely added to the family’s anguish and heightened suspicions.
Later, they found Sumant’s body bearing severe injuries, including visible bruises on his head.
The family alleged that Sumanta was brutally assaulted by the employees of the rehab centre which led to his untimely demise.
The deceased’s family, meanwhile, lodged a complaint with the Airport Police accusing the employees of the rehabilitation centre of killing him by abusing him physically.
Based on the complaint, police have initiated an investigation into the incident and sent Sumanta’s body for post-mortem to determine the cause of death. The rehabilitation centre’s administration has not commented on the incident.
