Malkangiri: A youth of MV-9 village in Malkangiri district committed suicide by consuming pesticide after his wife did not return from her paternal house.
The deceased identified as Sujit Haldar, a Bengali youth of MV-9 village, and a tribal girl Gayatri Padiami of neighbouring Bailapari village were in love.
As both their families were against their relationship due to the difference in the caste, both of them had fled from home and had a court marriage.
After court marriage, they went to the house of a relative, and their wedding was held as per Bengali tradition. Subsequently, Sujit returned to his home with his wife Gayatri.
A day after their return, Gayatri’s family visited MV-9 village and asked to send her back to her parental house with the assurance to bring her back in two days after completing some rituals.
Elders of both villages agreed to it and Gayatri went to her paternal house. After reaching her village, she was forced to appear before a kangaroo court called by some tribal leaders.
After being insulted in the meeting for marrying outside their tribe, Gayatri agreed that she would no longer return to Sujit.
As a result, Sujit went into depression and consumed pesticide four days back. He died during treatment yesterday at the district headquarters hospital in Malkangiri.
