Bhubaneswar: One person named Sukumar Sahoo was detained and cash worth Rs 80 lakh was recovered from him when a joint patrolling party comprising Cuttack Mobile unit and Excise department personnel intercepted him while he was boarding a bus for Kolkata at the Tangi toll gate in Khurda district.
According to police, while they were on a patrolling-cum-checking duty at around 9:30 pm on Thursday, they intercepted a youth carrying two airbags on the suspicion that he was smuggling narcotics. However, police recovered cash worth Rs lakh from the bags and suspect that the cash could spoil from narcotic smuggling.
Following interrogation, the youth confessed that he resided with his brother-in-law at Balu Bazar in Cuttack and was taking the cash to Kolkata. However, he did not offer any satisfactory explanation for carrying such a large amount of cash to Kolkata by bus.
Police have, therefore, detained the youth for further investigation. Both Sukumar Sahoo and the cash would be handed over to the Tangi police for further action as the incident occurred at the Tangi toll gate under its jurisdiction.
