Ahmedabad: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) congratulated Australia for successfully defending their FIBA U18 Asia Cup title after defeating China 89-79 in a thrilling final of the 2026 competition at the Veer Savarkar Indoor Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Australia unloaded a 7-0 run for the 69-62 lead late in the third quarter, and then pulled away in the fourth en route to completing the ‘back-to-back,’ in the process winning their third championship overall.

Jai Fa’ale led Australia with 19 points, sparked by a 4-of-10 clip from deep, as he sparked the aforementioned rally to put them ahead for good. Bailey Hanson supplied 17 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.

The IOA extended its warmest congratulations to Team Australia for their victory on Sunday night.

The IOA also commends the city of Ahmedabad for its successful hosting of the championship at the Veer Savarkar Indoor Stadium from 13–23 August, marking yet another milestone in India’s emergence as a premier destination for global sporting events.

The championship brought together leading young basketball players from 16 nations across Asia, showcasing the depth of emerging talent across the region. Its successful staging in Ahmedabad reflected the collaborative efforts of the organising partners to deliver a competition of a high international standard.

The tournament also served as an important qualification pathway, with the four semifinalists – Australia, China, New Zealand and Korea – securing their places at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2027 in Czechia.

IOA President Dr. P.T. Usha said: “I extend my warmest congratulations to Australia on their outstanding victory, and to the four nations that have secured their places at next year’s FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Czechia.

“Bringing 16 of Asia’s leading young teams together in Ahmedabad reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for the next generation through sport. Successfully delivering major international competitions such as the FIBA U18 Asia Cup continues to demonstrate India’s growing capabilities as a host, supported by world-class facilities, strong organisation and the warmth and hospitality of our people,” she said.

The tournament not only delivered spectacular action on the court but also engaged thousands of young Indian fans, reflecting the country’s rapidly growing passion for sport.

The IOA thanked the Basketball Federation of India, the Local Organising Committee, the Government of Gujarat and the volunteers who contributed to the successful delivery of the tournament. India looks forward to continuing its collaboration with International Federations to host major international sporting events and create more opportunities for young people across the country to engage with sport.
