New Delhi: The Indian freestyle wrestling team finished the final day of proceedings with three gold medals among seven medals, as India wrapped up the Ulaanbaatar Open Senior Ranking Series with a total of 17 medals across three categories.

The impressive cumulative haul ensured that India finished in the top three of the overall tournament team rankings.

Deepak, Dinesh, and Sagar Jaglan secured a gold medal each on Sunday, embellishing what has been a hugely successful tournament for the Indian contingent. India claimed the overall runner-up position in the Men’s Freestyle team rankings, finishing second only to Russia, and won the historic overall team championship in the Greco-Roman division with a dominant 119 points. The Women’s Wrestling squad also delivered a formidable campaign, heavily bolstering the nation’s overall standings with a stellar seven-medal haul.

“The phenomenal success of our freestyle squad in securing the runner-up position, coupled with our Greco-Roman team clinching the overall championship, is a historic milestone for Indian wrestling,” said Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh. “Winning 17 medals against world-class competition highlights the competitive depth of our athletes in the continental space.”

Focusing on the individual performances on the final day, Deepak claimed the 61kg Freestyle gold medal with a 6-0 victory over Kazakhstan’s Assyl Aitakyn. Dinesh captured the 125kg gold by defeating Kazakhstan’s Yedige Kassimbek 2-0, while Sagar Jaglan won the 74kg gold by edging out Russia’s Tamir Eshinimaev 3-2. The Freestyle squad’s success was further bolstered by four bronze medals from Sumit (57kg), Kumar Mohit (65kg), Jaideep (74kg), and Vicky (97kg).

Earlier in the tournament, the Greco-Roman unit completed its campaign with two gold medals from Sunil (87kg) and Nitesh (97kg), and a bronze from Sahil (60kg). The Women’s Wrestling division added seven medals to the final tally, headlined by gold-medal finishes from Manisha (57kg), Neha (59kg), and Kajal (76kg), alongside bronze medals won by Neelam (50kg), Hansika Lamba (55kg), Mansi (62kg), and Priya (76kg).

With these strong continental results, India continues to build crucial momentum heading into the major international events lined up for later this year.
