New Delhi: The Indian Embassy in Washington’s objection to The New York Times headline ‘Clashes Erupt in Pakistani Kashmir’ was not merely “pedantry over nomenclature”, but reflected India’s refusal to let “sloppy Western terminology” launder occupation into ownership, amid the Pakistani army’s brutality on the streets of Mirpur and other major towns of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), a report has stated.
The unrest in PoK has claimed more than 50 lives and left hundreds of civilians injured over the last few days, drawing international condemnation over the human rights abuses by Pakistani forces.
“On 29 July 2026, two things happened on the same day, in the same territory, and together they told the world everything it needs to know about Pakistan’s occupation of Kashmir. In Washington, the Indian Embassy issued a terse rebuke to The New York Times for headlining a report ‘Clashes Erupt in Pakistani Kashmir.’ ‘There is no Pakistani Kashmir,’ the Embassy wrote, ‘only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.’ In Mirpur, Kotli, Rawalakot and Muzaffarabad, Pakistani security forces were, at that very hour, firing live rounds into crowds of unarmed civilians who had gathered to boycott what Islamabad was calling a democratic exercise,” KBS Sidhu, a former Special Chief Secretary of Punjab, wrote in ‘India Narrative’ this week.
“The two dispatches were not unconnected. India’s correction of a newspaper’s vocabulary and the newspaper’s own reporting on a massacre were, in effect, the same story told from two vantage points — one diplomatic, one journalistic. Both converge on an inconvenient truth that Pakistan has spent seventy-nine years trying to obscure: the people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) are not willing subjects of Rawalpindi’s writ. They are a population under occupation, and in July 2026 they said so with their bodies,” he added.
According to Sidhu, every Assembly election in PoK is effectively overseen by Pakistan’s military and intelligence establishment, with the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) historically vetting candidates and the outcome rarely coming as a surprise in Rawalpindi.
He noted that what set July 2026 apart was not the election itself, but the unprecedented refusal of the people in PoK that Islamabad claimed to represent to participate in the sham — a defiance Pakistan met with bullets.
Emphasising that Pakistan’s failure was perhaps best illustrated in London, the report highlighted how British Kashmiris and diaspora Kashmiris — “not Indian nationals or agents of New Delhi” but the sons and daughters of PoK itself —marched from Hyde Park to the Pakistan High Commission protesting against atrocities by Pakistani forces in the occupied territory.
“These were people protesting Pakistan, in the heart of a Western capital, in numbers Islamabad’s embassy could not ignore. That is the most damning testimony of all: the diaspora Pakistan has spent decades claiming as evidence of Kashmiri loyalty to its cause instead marched against it,” it stated.
The report stressed that India’s response has remained calibrated, factual, and restrained, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) describing the elections as a “cosmetic exercise” aimed at legitimising Pakistan’s illegal occupation.
India has slammed Pakistan for conducting the “so-called local elections” in PoK, terming the electoral exercise as a “complete farce”, which cannot hide reality.
“This so-called local elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is a complete farce. The real happening is that of public protests and wanton killings by the Pakistani forces. Such hollow exercises cannot hide reality. Since June this year, at least 90 civilians have lost their lives in the continuing crackdown, many more have been injured as you have seen,” said Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
“The Pakistani establishment has answered public discontent with bullets, blackouts, intimidation and repression and now seeks to manufacture legitimacy through a hollow electoral exercise. It must be held accountable and the world should see through the veneer of Pakistan’s hypocritical lecturing on human rights,” he added while addressing a bi-weekly media briefing.
