Bhadrak: A fish fetched lakhs of rupees for a fisherman in just a few minutes at the Chandinipala fish auction centre of Chandbali in Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Friday.
The fisherman had recovered the fish from Dhamra river mouth. During the auction, it was sold at a price of Rs 3.10 lakh to a pharmaceutical company in Mumbai.
The fish is Ghol, or Protonibea diacanthus, commonly known as the black-spotted croaker and locally as Telia, which is a species of fish native to the Indo-Pacific region.
It is a highly sought-after fish in some East Asian countries for its medicinal properties.
The heart of this fish is known as the ‘Sea Gold’, which is said to have medicinal properties and is an important ingredient in making a variety of medicines.
Ghol’s skin contains a good source of high-quality collagen that is used for manufacturing cosmetics and medicines, while its fins are used by pharma companies to manufacture stitches and in wine purification.
