Bhubaneswar: The carcass of a female elephant was found near Tiliki village under the Mujagarh range of Odisha’s Ganjam district on Wednesday. Local villagers first spotted the dead elephant and informed the Forest department staff.

According to the Forest department officials, the dead elephant is aged around 40 years. They added that samples of the carcass have been sent for post-mortem. A team from Bhubaneswar has been sent to Ganjam to undertake the post-mortem of the animal.

While the precise reason for the elephant’s death is yet to be ascertained, Forest officials suspect that it might have died due to an intra-herd fight as the animal has several wounds on its body. Locals said that they had seen a herd of 22 elephants in the area on Tuesday.
