Malkangiri: Various areas of Malkangiri district in Odisha have been deluged due to incessant rain since Monday disrupting normal life. In Jaha, the communication between Malkangari and Balimela has been cut off as water is flowing 4 feet over the MV 37 bridge. Similarly, water is flowing 3 to 4 feet over the bridges in Kakurkunda, MV No. 90 from National Highway No. 326. As a result, communication between Malkangiri and Matu has also been cut off. Water is flowing 3 feet over the bridge near the Kalimela Girls’ Ashram cutting off communication between the Malaya block and the Kalimela.

Rainwater from the hills is adding to the misery of the people who are unable to go outdoors. The common people are facing transportation problems.

On the other hand, heavy rain is needed for agricultural work. The farmers have welcomed the downpours and have started agricultural activities in Malkangiri district after a dry spell. According to the Malkangiri District Emergency Officer, Malkangiri recorded 442.3 mm of rain on Monday. Even now Malkangiri is receiving heavy rain and it is feared that if the intensity of rains continues, communication between Malkangari and Jeypore will be disrupted when the water level in the Pangam river rises.

Below is the average rainfall recorded at different blocks of Malkangiri district in the last 24 hours.

Malkangiri: 183.2 mm

Mathili: 79. 0 mm

Khairput: 88.0 mm

Chitrakonda: 199.0 mm

Korukonda: 185.0 mm
