Berhampur: The mortal remains of former Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker and senior BJD leader Surjya Narayana Patro were consigned to flames with State honour at the crematorium ground in Kapamandi village under Digapahandi block in Odisha’s Ganjam district at 5.15 pm on Sunday.
The departed leader was given a guard of honour before mortal remains were consigned to flames. Surjya Narayan Patro’s elder son Biplab Patro lit the funeral fire.
Patro passed away on Saturday night while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar last evening. He was 75.
A large number of people, people’s representatives, BJD workers, and well-wishers gathered at the crematorium ground to pay their last respects to Patra, a popular leader who represented the Digapahandi constituency in the Odisha Assembly thrice and Mohana four times.
Earlier in the day, Governor Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and many other leaders cutting across party lines expressed deep grief over Patro’s death.
