Bhubaneswar: An octogenarian woman accidentally fell into a 20-foot-deep abandoned borewell near Kemuphul village along the Sonepur-Burda road in Odisha’s Subarnapur district on Monday night.
According to reports, the woman, who had come to her daughter’s house in Kemuphul village, had gone out to collect some items for making a broom on Monday night and accidentally fell into the abandoned borewell.
Rescue operations have begun by the Fire Services personnel on Tuesday morning and oxygen is being supplied to the woman. Fire Services personnel said that though the woman is visible from the top, she has not been responding to their calls.
Meanwhile, the Fire Services personnel dug another hole into the ground parallel to the borewell and they tried to rescue the woman by reaching to her through the second hole dug with the help of JCB machine. The rescuers are optimistic that the operation would be over within another hour.
Acting on the directives of the Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), an Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) team has already reached the spot, while a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is also on the way. This team had earlier worked in rescue operations in Chhattisgarh and they would utilise that experience.
A large crowd, including the family members of the victim, has gathered at the site and is praying for the safe return of the woman.
