Bhubaneswar: President of India Droupadi Murmu on Saturday expressed grief over the death of eight people in boat capsize incident in Mahanadi River near Jharsuguda.
Condoling the loss of lives in the unfortunate incident, Murmu took to her X handle and wrote: “Distressed to learn that the capsize of a boat in Mahanadi River near Jharsuguda, Orissa led to loss of many lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery of all those affected by the tragedy.”
Notably, the tragic incident happened on Friday afternoon when a boat carrying more than 50 passengers, including women and children, capsized in the Mahanadi River in Lakhanpur of Jharsuguda district.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the boat capsize incident rose to 8 which includes five women and three minor boys.
All the passengers were from the Kharsani area of neighbouring Chhattisgarh and going to Patharseni in the Ambabhona block of Bargarh district.
They were crossing the Mahanadi at Sharda in Lakhanpur block of Jharsuguda when the boat overturned in the middle of the river at around 3 pm on Friday.
