Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Wednesday granted bail to the fiancée of the army major, who was arrested and subjected to custodial torture by Bharatpur police in Bhubaneswar.
The court clarified that the lower court would decide the conditions of the bail.
The woman was arrested following a tussle with police personnel at Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar two days ago.
The High Court directed the State government to bear the medical expenses of the Army officer’s lady friend who is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar after being assaulted by police.
The hearing on the petition seeking quashing of the case against her remains incomplete. The court posted the matter to September 26 for the next hearing.
On Saturday night, both the army officer and his fiancée had moved to Bharatpur police station to report about a road rage by some miscreants.
Police allegedly manhandled the duo and arrested the woman.
As the matter snowballed into a major controversy across the country, Odisha DGP YB Khurania suspended five cops including the IIC of Bharatpur police station.
