Bhubaneswar: Diarrhoea outbreak claimed four lives and affected over 30 people in six panchayats under Kanas block in Puri district. The outbreak is suspected to be caused by contaminated water from the Daya River.
As per reports, the affected individuals are undergoing treatment at the Kanas Community Health Centre. District officials have visited the affected areas, provided medicines, and urged people not to use the Daya River water.
Four people, including Sarathi Pradhan, Sachala Sahu, Magi Dalai, and Gurei Sethi from Nuagaon, have reportedly lost their lives to the water-borne disease. The incident has left villagers fearful of being affected.
Concerned over the diarrhoea outbreak, officials from the district administration visited the affected areas, took stock of the situation and provided medicines to the ailing persons. The administration has, meanwhile, urged people not to use Daya River water.
Besides, Puri MP Sambit Patra visited the affected villages and discussed measures with district and block officials to prevent further spread.
Patra emphasized the need for alternative water sources, saying, “We have arranged more tankers so that people can avoid contaminated water. I urge people to use tubewell water, wash their hands before eating, and avoid community feasts. Ambulance services are ready for emergencies.”
Talking to the media, Patra said, “We have arranged more tankers so that people in the affected areas will refrain from using the contaminated water of the Daya River. Apart from raising the tanker numbers, we have asked the concerned authorities to increase the frequency of providing water in the affected areas.”
“As an MP, I would like to urge people not to depend on river water. Instead, they should opt for tubewell water, wash their hands before eating and stop attending community feasts.”
