Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the 19th Toshali National Crafts Mela at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar, emphasizing the importance of preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage.

Handloom, he said, is a symbol of Odia identity and has provided livelihoods to thousands of artisans, teaching them self-reliance.

The Chief Minister expressed his commitment to supporting the handloom and handicrafts sector, acknowledging the significant role played by mothers and sisters in rural economies. He highlighted the state government’s initiatives, including proposing an expenditure of Rs. 52 crore for handicraft promotion and Rs. 122 crore for textile and handloom industry promotion in the financial year 2025-26.

The fair, which will remain open until March 31, features over 650 stalls showcasing handicrafts and handlooms from more than 15 states. Minister for Cooperatives, Handlooms, Textiles, and Handicrafts Pradeep Balasamat emphasized the unique charm of Odisha’s handloom and handicraft items, highlighting their role in women empowerment and livelihood security.

The event aims to provide a platform for artisans and weavers to showcase their talents and earn a living. With a focus on linking tourism with handicrafts, the state government plans to develop Kantilo, Pipili, Hirakud area, Cuttack, and Kotpad as heritage craft and weaving villages.
