Bhubaneswar: In a bid to empower girl students and ensure their safety, the state government is hosting the Rani Laxmibai Atma Raksha Prashikshan (Self-Defence Training) program for girls studying in government schools.

The initiative which targets upper primary and secondary students, aims to build self-confidence and equip them to handle any untoward situations they may encounter in real life.

The program was announced by the School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond in the state assembly on Friday.

In response to a question from Simulia MLA Padmalochan Panda, the Minister explained that the program is not only designed to enhance self-defence skills but also to foster healthy habits, reduce anxiety and stress and cultivate a positive mindset among girls.

Minister Gond further highlighted the benefits of the program, noting that the self-defence training helps students become physically, mentally, and emotionally strong and stable, empowering them to face challenges in real life.

To facilitate the training, an allocation of Rs. 15,000 per school has been made, as per the Annual Work Plan & Budget (AWP&B) approval.

Additionally, the state government is implementing the School Health & Wellness Programme, under the Ayushman Bharat initiative, which focuses on “Emotional Wellbeing & Mental Health.”

The program, in collaboration with the Health & Family Welfare Department, includes a specialized curriculum for adolescents in schools.

Teachers designated as School Health Ambassadors (SHAs) from each school (both upper primary and secondary) have been oriented on the curriculum, which covers a wide range of themes, such as:

  • Growing Up Healthy
  • Emotional Wellbeing and Health
  • Interpersonal Relationships
  • Values and Responsible Citizenship
  • Gender Equality
  • Nutrition, Health & Sanitation
  • Prevention and Management of Substance Misuse
  • Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles
  • Reproductive Health and HIV Prevention
  • Safety and Security Against Violence and Injuries
  • Safe Use of the Internet and Social Media

Furthermore, a series of programs are being organized at the school level to promote healthy study habits, stress management, and time management. These include:

  1. Tips for Preparing for the 10th Board Examination
  2. Awareness Program on Time Management
  3. Orientation on “Pustaka Eka Uttama Bandhu”
  4. Sessions on “Patha Padhare Agraha”
  5. Orientation on “Ekagrata Brudhi” and more

To help reduce anxiety and stress, the government has also been conducting the “Pariksha Pe Charcha” (PPC) program, which has been held annually since 2018.

The 8th edition of PPC was held on February 10, 2025, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with students, teachers, and parents across the country. During the session, the Prime Minister shared valuable tips on how to approach board and entrance exams in a calm and stress-free manner.

The live broadcast of the event was viewed by students, parents, and teachers, including the Chief Minister of Odisha, the Education Minister, and senior officials, who participated in the telecast at the Government Boys’ High School, Unit-I, Bhubaneswar. In addition, the Chief Minister of Odisha engaged with students, offering advice on how to approach exams with reduced stress.

The ongoing efforts by the Odisha government aim to create a positive and supportive environment for students, fostering both their academic success and emotional well-being.
