Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, an elephant trampled a ‘Gaja Sathi’ (elephant squad) to death in Katada village under Jarapada police station in Angul district.
According to police sources, the incident happened at 3:30 am today when a herd of eight elephants was returning to the forest near the village.
The elephant squad, tasked with chasing the elephants away, encountered the herd. In the process, a mother elephant perceived one of the squad members, Naik (40), as a threat to her calf and trampled him to death.
Upon receiving the information, a team led by Ranger Madhav Naik and local police officials reached the spot, recovered the body, and initiated an investigation into the incident. The authorities are probing the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
