Bhubaneswar: The water level of the Subarnarekha River in Balasore district has risen sharply, crossing the danger mark and raising fears of flooding. According to the latest flood bulletin issued by the Department of Water Resources at 6 pm on Sunday, the river at Rajghat recorded a level of 11.17 meters, exceeding the danger level of 10.36 meters. Officials predict the river will reach a peak flood level of 11.40 meters by 9 pm tonight.
Other rivers in the region, including the Baitarani and Jalaka, showed fluctuating water levels but remained mostly below danger thresholds.
The Baitarani at Anandapur stood at 36.24 meters against a danger level of 38.36 meters and was falling, while the Jalaka River at Mathani was marginally above the danger level at 6.52 meters but trending downward.
In response to the alarming rise in the Subarnarekha, the State Flood Cell is monitoring the situation closely around the clock. The Collector of Balasore has been alerted and is coordinating with local administration to initiate evacuation and relief operations if required.
The Chief Engineer and Basin Manager of the Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga Basins are overseeing ground-level operations, working closely with district officials to ensure the safety of residents in vulnerable areas. Meanwhile, the Engineer-in-Chief-cum-Special Secretary of the Department of Water Resources has set up a camp in Balasore to supervise flood management efforts directly.
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to stay alert and follow official instructions as the situation develops.
