Bhubaneswar: Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, met with Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, to request the issuance of a Letter of Permission (LoP) for Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College (PMPMC) in Talcher and Government Medical College (GMC) in Phulbani.

The state government is seeking permission to admit 200 MBBS students in the academic year 2025-26, with 100 seats allocated to each college.

The two medical colleges were recently established to cater to the growing demand for medical education in Odisha. The National Medical Commission (NMC) teams conducted physical inspections of the colleges in June and May 2025, and the state government has provided the necessary budgetary grants to enhance facilities and ensure quality medical education.

If the LoP is granted, the number of government medical colleges in Odisha will increase from 14 to 16, and the total number of MBBS seats in government institutions will rise to 1800. The meeting was attended by several dignitaries, including Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Odisha Minister of Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water and Rural Development, Rabi Narayan Naik, and Members of Parliament from Cuttack, Bargarh, and Kandhamal.

The Odisha Health Minister urged the Union Health Minister to intervene to grant the LoP for the admission of MBBS students in the 2025-26 academic session.
